The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF recommend the use of CR packaging or child-resistant packaging, especially for medication or chemical-heavy products. Why? According to statistics, a child receives a hospital emergency every 8 minutes due to accidental ingestion of poisonous substances.
What is Child-Resistant Packaging?
Child-resistant packaging is the kind of packaging which is specifically designed to be considerably hard to open for children under the age of 5. This ensures that they won’t be able to access the contents of harmful or poisonous substances. It is also to be noted that child-resistant packaging shouldn’t be so complicated either that adults could not understand how to open it.
The general guidelines for child-resistant packaging are something like this –
- 80 percent of the children shouldn’t be able to open the package within the time frame of the first 10 minutes.
- Also, 90 percent of adults should be able to figure out how to open the package within 5 minutes. They should also be able to close the package again in a proper manner, for it to become child-resistant again.
Types of Child-Resistant Packaging
In terms of design, there are two types of child-resistant packages: reclosable and non-reclosable. Various methods can be used to create these designs. Different materials and strategies ensure the packaging is truly child-resistant in every way possible.
Cartons – If you are looking for a simple, inexpensive CR packaging solution, cartons are a great option for you. ‘Push points along with a pulling motion’ strategy is usually employed to make cartons effectively child-resistant.
Rigid Boxes – If you prefer something a little more elegant than carton boxes, go for rigid boxes, instead. Practicality-wise, they are absolutely safe and functional. Plus, they look a lot more premium and aesthetically pleasing than carton boxes.
Capsules and Glass Jars – Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, capsules and glass jars with child-resistant caps are also two very popular options to consider. Capsules are widely used for storing cartridges and other medication-related products. Glass boxes or jars, on the other hand, are used for a wide range of purposes.
Both of these packaging solutions are known to be super hygienic and super safe. Though a little expensive, capsules and glass jars look absolutely stunning since they give a very professional and sophisticated appearance to your packaging design.
